it is kinda screwy but it facilitates primary companies to run much more efficiently as they don't need to hold as much capital as they would without it

It's a yuuge part of the business...it allows you to write say 10x what you could without it. Even with all of the deadbeat reinsurers out there (I'm looking at you, London.)

a lot of those companies are advertising so much to get more market share - a big thing now is everyone wants a direct to consumer unit and that takes a lot of marketing to build up

So they aren't making the money you would think - and in some cases taking a loss now for gaining market share (this is specifically for personal lines like auto insurance)

Life insurers are in a completely different boat. They are so dependent on investment income that with interest rates so low they are getting screwed. They are ok on regular life policies but a lot of them got killed on annuities as they price them based on getting a certain level of investment return and they aren't getting that in the current environment.
