Way back when, CBS would show Wizzid of Oz on Thanksgivin'....and Dave probably KNEW that but didn't actually experience it, and was trying to portray families (circa the mid-to-late 70's) as having done that.

That's my guess, anyway.

Kind of close. For a long while TBS would show The Wizard of Oz every Thanksgiving night for many years. I don't think he meant people watched it during dinner, but some people watched it on Thanksgiving night because it aired the same time each year.
